Kool & The Gang, the iconic band synonymous with funk, jazz, and R&B hits spanning decades, is set to light up the Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary on May 17. Robert “Kool” Bell, the group’s co-founder, recently joined Karen Clark for a conversation about their sparkling musical legacy, continued influence, and their excitement to connect with fans in North Carolina.

When asked about the secret to their lasting appeal, Bell credited their “groove simplicity” and the evolution of their sound. Early on, Kool & The Gang made waves with their debut single, “Kool and the Gang,” which unexpectedly soared to the Top 40. This was just the beginning of a rollercoaster of success, with back-to-back hits such as “Funky Stuff,” “Jungle Boogie,” and “Hollywood Swinging.”

The band’s influence has transcended generations, cementing them as one of the most sampled groups in hip-hop history. From Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “Summertime” to DJ Kool’s iconic “Let Me Clear My Throat,” their work continues to inspire artists to this day. “It’s a great feeling,” said Bell. “Most recently, we’re the most sampled band in hip hop. It shows what we have done has stood the test of time.”

The conversation also touched on the group’s monumental achievements. Kool & The Gang boasts accolades including seven American Music Awards, two Grammys, and even a Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award. Their hit “Celebration” was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, and just last October, they earned their rightful place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Reflecting on the milestone, Bell shared, “It took a while, but it’s never too late. We’re proud to finally be recognized for all of our songs and the mark we’ve left.”

Fans attending the May performance can expect to hear a mix of timeless classics from every era. From the funky grooves of the 70s’ “Jungle Boogie” to the beloved anthems of the 80s like “Ladies Night” and “Celebration,” the setlist promises a memorable evening.
