The Oxford University Press has named “Brain rot” its 2024 Word of the Year, increasing its usage by 230% from the previous year.
The term refers to the supposed mental deterioration caused by overconsumption of trivial or unchallenging material, particularly online content.
Chosen through a combination of public vote and language analysis, “brain rot” reflects a defining theme of the past year related to humanity’s interaction with technology.
Brain rot beat five other phrases or words on the dictionary publisher’s shortlist, including demure, Romantasy and dynamic pricing.
Psychologist and Oxford University Professor Andrew Przybylski says the popularity of the word is a “symptom of the time we’re living in”.
Despite its modern connotations, the term was first used by Henry David Thoreau in 1854.
Last year’s Oxford word of the year was “rizz,” while Collins Dictionary chose “brat” for 2024
