Juneteenth: A Global Celebration For Freedom

In music, you can tell who puts their heart and soul into every note they play. Mike Phillips is one of those musicians.

With a career spanning 3 decades, the acclaimed saxophonist has mastered the art of bringing joy to his music. That art has led him to five studio albums, performing for audiences around the world, a deal with Jordan Brand (a first for a musician), and the distinct honor of becoming the only musician to perform for soul/pop music’s “Big 3” – Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Michael Jackson.

To say that something special happens whenever he plays…Well, that would be an understatement.

Ahead of his “Smooth Jazz @ The Improv” show in the Triangle on Wednesday night (Sept. 18), Phillips checked in with Karen Clark about his music, including putting the right amount of soul into his now-famous rendition of the National Anthem, which he performs over a dozen times a year at major sporting events. Trust us…it’s an art that not too many people can master. (We’re not saying names.)
