The leaders of the IKEMBA Youth Department of St. Joseph AME Church are holding an educational forum on banned books, and the loss of education on African American history. Professor Jerry Gershenhorn, PhD the Julius L. Chambers Professor of History, at North Carolina Central University will be the guest speaker. Dr. Gershenhorn specializes in 20th century United States History, African American, North Carolina, and Media history. He will make the connection between the current book bans that have happened in certain states in America to the controversial Project 2025, produced by the conservative think-tank, the Heritage Foundation.
The IKEMBA Youth Department leadership is largely educators, led by retired Durham Public Schools administrator, Willa Sample. There will be a short video of a trip to Ghana taken by one of the program leaders, along with other anecdotal storytelling from authors to encourage the community in attendance to understand the importance of learning African American history, and the necessity of reading. There will also be a display of the books that have been banned.

St. Joseph AME is known for its work on social justice issues. It’s senior pastor, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Augustine, is a widely sought after speaker, author, and advocate for civil rights.
