Actress Tika Sumpter took to Twitter yesterday to let North Carolinians know that it’s important to return your library books.

Apparently, there is a law in our state that says folks can be arrested for overdue books. According to the New York Daily News, we’re not the only state with this law. Texas and Michigan are also in the “we’ll arrest you over library books” club.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s office tells a slightly different story. They say that Tika’s mom, Janice Acquista, wrote a bad check for the $10 library fine and never made good after the check bounced.

“It was a worthless check, and the D.A.’s office took out a warrant for her,” said Tammy Amaon, a public information officer for the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
