After a gunman killed five police in an ambush following a peaceful protest in downtown Dallas, some critics of Black Lives Matter began to blame the movement for the shootings.

CNN reported Friday morning that a gunman, who had nothing to do with the movement, was killed by an explosive device on a police robot. He was reportedly upset about recent police-involved shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Still, critics blamed peaceful protesters for the senseless killings, reports The Daily Beast:

“Pop, pause, pop, pause. Then you see the first two officers go down,” said Jamal Johnson, who attended the evening’s rally and remained behind among bewildered protesters and gathering bystanders waiting for answers.

[…]

“The other officers began to think that the protesters were the ones who were actually firing, but the protesters were peaceful. They were running for their lives. They were terrified,” Johnson continued. “They fired about 14, 15 return shots once they realized where the shooters were shooting from,” pointing toward the 12-story parking garage off Bank of America Plaza.

“When we came tonight everything was so peaceful, man. It was united,” said Johnson, recounting the evening’s events. “And for them [the shooters] to ruin it like that.”

Earlier in the evening on Thursday, Joe Walsh, a former Illinois congressional representative, blamed the shootings on President Obama and the Black Lives Matter movement in since deleted tweet. He also ranted about how BLM and Obama were responsible for the shootings.

From The New York Daily News:

“This is now war. Watch out Obama. Watch out black lives matter punks. Real America is coming after you.”

He deleted the tweet after fierce backlash, and later wrote that he “wasn’t calling for violence, against Obama or anyone.”

However, that didn’t stop him from targeting the President and protesters in a series of hateful tweets spewed over four hours.

Even police have said the protest was peaceful, so why would Walsh blame protesters? Is it because they are trying to shake up the status quo by raising questions about police excessive force in communities of color?

Indeed, no one wants to see police shot and killed by a raving mad man – or anybody. And calling for the end of police excessive force is not the same as calling for the death of police officers. The issues are mutually exclusive.

Walsh needs to delete his Twitter account and learn the facts. Sound off in the comments.
