Akiel Denkins was shot and killed by Raleigh Police after a long foot chase. The shooting occurred at Bragg Street and S. East Street in southeast Raleigh around noon close to a business called PJ’s Grill and Groceries. An officer was trying to serve a warrant to Denkins on a drug charge when the chase and subsequent shooting occurred.

Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck Brown tsaid a gun was found near Denkins and asked for prayers and patience as the shooting is investigated. She said she expects to have initial findings ready for the city manager in the next few days.

The victim’s mother, Rolanda Byrd, says the shooting was not accidental.

According to WTVD, Byrd said:

They couldn’t catch him so they shot at him seven times.

Everybody seen it,” said Byrd. “They ain’t going down with this one. They ain’t gonna get away with this one, there’s at least 40 eyewitnesses out here.

Byrd said several people told her that her 24-year-old son was unarmed and was shot by a white officer.
