The Supreme Court just scored another so-called “like” from liberal admirers after voting 5-4 on Monday to allow 10 abortion clinics in Texas to remain open, as they weigh whether to hear an appeal from a decision that effectively orders them to close, according to The New York Times.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. cast dissenting votes in the pivotal decision for pro-choice advocates in the abortion debate.

Reports The Times:

The case concerns two parts of a state law that imposes strict requirements on abortion providers. One requires all abortion clinics in the state to meet the standards for “ambulatory surgical centers,” including regulations concerning buildings, equipment and staffing. The other requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Other parts of the law took effect in 2013, causing about half of the state’s 41 abortion clinics to close. If the contested provisions take effect, abortion rights advocates said, the number of clinics will again be halved.

Abortion providers applauded the court’s decision to keep the state abortion clinics open, calling the regulations onerous, and an expensive ploy to put many of them out of business, notes The Times.

The decision comes after two big wins for liberals last week, when the court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage and Obamacare subsidies.
