We’ve lost another treasure, the award winning actress Ruby Dee, 91 passed away this morning at her home in Rochelle, New York with her family by her side. Her career spanned over seven decades in film, television, stage, and civil rights.

Born, Ruby Ann Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922, she took on the surname Dee after marrying blues singer Frankie Dee. She later divorced Dee after a short marriage and married Ossie Davis in 1948. Davis preceded his wife in death in 2005.

She earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in “American Gangster” and also won an Emmy and Grammy for numerous body’s of work.
