Best known as the Duke Lacrosse rape accuser, Crystal Mangum is currently on trial for murder in Durham. She is accused of stabbing her then boyfriend, Reginald Daye, with a kitchen knife. He died days later. Mangum maintains that she stabbed Daye out of self-defense. According to her, Daye had been drinking liquor the day of the stabbing and accused of her of disrespecting him by talking to other men. Mangum claims that he was hitting her in the face, choking her and pulled her out of a bathroom where she was trying to escape him by her hair.

Others dispute her story. Friends say that Daye didn’t drink liquor, only beer. On the stand, she was questioned about her choking story and asked to explain why there was no injury to her neck. Also, prosecutors asked why she didn’t have more swelling on her face if Daye had hit her so many times. In addition, prosecutors asked if she flirted with the EMS crew that arrived after the stabbing. She responded with, “Probably,” according to WTVD.

Mangum is charged with first-degree murder. She previously made national headlines in 2006 when she accused a group of Duke University lacrosse players of sexually assaulting her while she worked as a stripper at a party. The accusations were later found to be false, and Attorney General Roy Cooper dismissed all charges filed against the students.
