The City of Raleigh is reminding residents that they now must pay vehicle property taxes along with registration renewals at the same time. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) this year launched its Tag and Tax Together Program, which allows vehicle owners to conveniently pay both their local vehicle property taxes and state registration renewals together.

Residents should make sure that the address on their annual vehicle registration is current. If it is not, notify the DMV at 919-814-1779. Residents whose addresses are correct on vehicle registration forms will receive a notice that lists both vehicle registration fees and taxes due. Vehicle owners will receive the renewal notice about 60 days prior to the expiration of their vehicle’s registration.

For vehicle owners, their vehicle inspection, registration renewal and vehicle property taxes will be due the same month each year. Only one payment to DMV — made either in person, online or by mail — is required to pay for registration renewal and local vehicle property taxes. Additionally, the City of Raleigh assesses a $30 annual tag fee on all motor vehicles in the Capital City; that fee also will be collected by DMV as part of the combined one-time yearly payment under the new Tag and Tax Together Program.

Vehicle inspection fees will continue to be paid to the inspection station.

DMV will forward the vehicle tax portion of the payment to the county where the vehicle is registered. Counties, in turn, will continue to distribute the revenue to municipalities in their jurisdiction based on a formula.

The City of Raleigh’s share of revenue from vehicle property taxes and tag fees help support City operations, including police, fire and emergency communications, infrastructure improvements, and transportation and transit services costs.
