The dark gray sweater Trayvon Martin was last wearing on the night he was shot to death could be displayed at the Smithsonian’s National. The museum’s director, Lonnie Bunch, said the hoodie has become a national symbol. “It’s rare that you get one artifact that really becomes a symbol.” Bunch went on to say, “because it’s such a symbol, it would allow you to talk about race in the age of Obama.” Protesters across the country wore hoodies in support of Martin as they called for Zimmerman’s arrest, prosecution and conviction.

The hoodie is now stored with other evidence from the case at the U.S. Department of Justice, which has opened an investigation into whether Zimmerman violated Martin’s civil rights.

The museum is scheduled to open in 2015.
