Have you check your wallet lately? You could be passing funny money and not know it. Counterfeiters have gone high-tech. A few counterfeit artists still engrave metal plates and search for soft paper that matches the government’s blend. Others soak money in a chemical soup, rubbing off ink to create bills of another denomination. Now criminals manipulate scanners, printers and toner ink to create money where once there was none. In North Carolina and around the nation, more of the same fake bills are showing up.
How to detect if you are holding a fake 50 dollar bill. The feel of the bill will be different from what you are use to, the color, the dullness or shine and any security features. You can tell if it’s a fake by holding the bill up to a bright light. The real bill will have a vertical security thread to the left of the portrait which reads “USA FIFTY”. This thread cannot be duplicated by the printing techniques commonly used by counterfeiters.
