George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman from Florida charged in the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, could face more charges.

Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he contends the shooting was in self-defense. Zimmerman is facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

If Zimmerman is charged and found guilty of a federal hate crime involving murder, he could face the death penalty. FBI representatives are interviewing residents of Zimmerman’s neighborhood in Sanford, Fla., looking for evidence of a hate crime.
