In an unexpected twist, the New York Daily News reports that police are expected to arrest three SUNY-Albany students who said they were victims of a racially-motivated attack.

Authorities will charge the trio — Alexis Briggs, Ariel Agudio, and Asha Burwell— with third-degree assault and making a false report, according to the newspaper.

The three 20-year-old Black women reported to police that a group of White students on a city bus physically attacked them while using racial slurs on Jan. 30. Onlookers, they said, failed to intervene.

But a police investigation concluded something quite different.

“The evidence indicates they were actually the aggressors in the physical altercation, and that they continued to assault the victim despite the efforts of several passengers to stop them,” police said in a statement, according to the Daily News.

Authorities say the only victim is an unidentified 19-year-old who was allegedly beaten by the Black women.

There’s bound to be fallout. Social media lit up with support for the trio when news of a racially-motivated attack emerged. It triggered a mass rally on campus, a hashtag (#DefendBlackGirlsUAlbany), and a Twitter condemnation from presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

The women are expected to face a judge on Monday.
