LOCAL NEWS

Wake County school officials are working on a student re-assignment plan for the 2016-2017 school year. Five new schools will open next year.

The Wake County school board announced that the driver’s education program will be suspended at the end of the week. Students who have already started the training will be allowed to finish but no new students can enroll. The suspension stems from uncertainty over state funding for the program.

Five additional suspects were charged Tuesday in connection with the July 13 robbery at Walnut Creek Amphitheater in which $500,000 was taken. All five suspects are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

The Durham Rescue Mission is hosting a back to school party Wednesday. Children will be given new school supplies and clothes with their new book bags. The backpack giveaway begins Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Durham Rescue Mission located at 1201 E. Main Street at the corner of Highway 55.
