Brooklyn Native Laurel Dewitt took us all to Church this Sunday Feb 15th and presented a show so full of SLAY that even the Holy Apostles in Chelsea will surely need to be re-baptized. Otherwise they would find themselves forever fashionably chained. Yes, chained to Laurel’s every intricate detail and exquisite craftsmanship in her hand crocheted metal apparel in her NYFW 2015 collection.
Laurel’s parents Ellen and Doug Dewitt sat front row. When I chatted with Ellen after the show she seemed to be on the verge of tears, “Every time I see her present I am even more blown away than the last. I’m just very proud of her.” The execution of each piece was so precise and ornate, with hidden internal construction which Ellen shared can take up to a week to produce.
The show was set in a historic episcopal church which was built in 1845 by NY Architect Minard Lafever in Italianate style. This style which modeled 16th century Italian Architecture features geometric stained glass windows designed by William Jay Bolton. It was in complete accord and alignment with Dewitt’s diametric results and geometric patterns for her metal crop jackets, hot pants and a full metal 1970’s hooded dress that slowly strutted down the runway by the beautiful Amber Rose. The correlation between the venue and the collection was so perfect you would have never guessed it was only secured less than a week ago. “Last week we didn’t even know our venue” Ellen Dewitt admitted.
Mashonda and Swizz Beats son, Kasseem Dean Jr was the first model to hit the runway. This is his third time walking for Laurel. Project Runway Season 12 winner, Rayuana Aleyce annihilated the finale in a metal ball gown which featured an ascending series of caged tiers and an elaborate headpiece. This was Mashonda’s favorite piece, and she stated, “that finale was a FINALE,” and we briefly chatted about her 2016 book project which I can’t wait to hear more about.
Reality star, Mimi Faust congratulated Laurel on stage after the show. I chatted with Mimi and learned that in addition to returning for another season of “Love & Hip Hop” this year she’ll also be starting her own Interior Design company, no launch date has been set yet.
Other celebrities in the building included R&B Singer Justine Skye and reality star turned shoe designer, Emily B. As a treat, custom cake studio, B Cake NY from Brooklyn provided cake pops for the first and second row seats.
Check out a few of our favorites from the show:
