GM to Invest $449 Million in Detroit-Area Auto Plants

General Motors is investing $449 million in two Detroit-area factories that will build the next generation of the Chevrolet Volt hybrid electric car, the Associated Press reports. GM would not say how many jobs would be added, but the cash infusion will eventually create a second shift at the Detroit assembly plant that makes the Volt and other cars. The plant now employs about 1,600 workers on a single shift, AP reports. Read more.

Congress Decides Now Is Not the Time to Give Themselves a Raise

At a fundraiser for Democratic candidates in Houston on Wednesday evening, President Obama described the current Congress as “the least productive…in modern history,” and called for a “Congress that works, not one that marches in lockstep.” He didn’t get a chance to call them greedy too, since just hours earlier the House Appropriations Committee rejected retiring Representative Jim Moran’s plan to offer his fellow legislators $25 a day, on top of their $174,000 annual salary. Poll: Nearly 6 in 10 Say Race Relations in America Are ‘Generally Good’

Nearly 50 years after the historic passage of the 1964 Civil Right Act, a survey of Americans on the state of race relations in the United States revealed that most believe they are “generally good.” The CBS News poll, conducted from March 26 – 30 of 1,017 adults, revealed that 59 percent of respondents believe race relations are good. That result includes 60 percent of white respondents and 55 percent of African-American respondents. Read more.
