DEAR TOM,

My mom was a cheerleader at the University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff. That’s where she met my dad. he enlisted in the Marines, They got married and they moved to El Toro, California. after his service, they moved to Dallas.

They started a family but, sadly, it didn’t work out. I later found out that he was abusive to her. I was 7 when She got a divorce and my little brother was 3. ever since then, she has put us before everything in order to provide our basic needs and a stable home.

When we went to the mall, she never bought anything for herself – it was to purchase clothing for my brother and me.  Her visits to the Beauty Salon were rare – because she was always taking us to the barbershop. and When her friends asked her to go on a weekend trip with them, she always said “no” – for obvious reasons.

Don’t get me wrong, my Mom has always been a beautiful lady – she just wanted to make sure we were healthy, active in school and that we stayed out of trouble. I went on to graduate with a masters degree in public administration from Texas State University and My younger brother started a clothing line.

My mom loves jazz music, reading, keeping up with current events and hanging out with her sisters who have also moved to Dallas. we threw her a party for her 50th birthday but I know She could use a real good pampering.
