Veterans in need will be able to access help with housing, food, basic medical and legal assistance, employment counseling, local health and human services, substance abuse services, mental health assessments, flu shots, mammograms, haircuts, showers, and more at the annual Bull City Stand Down, Sept. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The activities will take place at the Durham County Memorial Stadium and National Guard Armory located at 750 Stadium Drive, Durham, N.C.
The annual event focused on helping Veterans who are homeless or lack stable housing is the result of a cooperative effort among local businesses, community partners and government agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs. New this year is a free dental clinic.
“The entire event is dedicated to providing services and helping Veterans and their families’ access available benefits,” said Bull City Stand Down Chairperson Darryl P. Hicklen. Hicklen said the Stand Down has grown in size and scope each year thanks to strong community support and stressed that organizers are reaching out to all Veterans, both female and male.
Free booth space is available, with an in-kind donation, to employers and other Veteran service agencies interested in providing on-site support to Veterans. The Durham Area Transit Authority will provide free bus and ACCESS services to and from the event throughout all regular routes until 5 p.m.
