Thirteen school districts across the state have installed school bus tracking devices that promise to help parents track a vehicle’s route and improve operating efficiency. The technology installed for the school year that starts this week aims to keep kids safer by tracking school buses, monitoring driver behavior, performing engine diagnostics and tracking when kids get on and off the vehicle.

One optional component of the school bus tracker lets students sign in and off the bus using their student ID card, giving parents confirmation about their child’s location, according to WNCN. Verizon Wireless says the school districts using the technology in our immediate area include: Durham, Franklin, Harnett and Wilson counties.
