The Green Chair Project will host a ‘Love Your Neighborhood’ furniture drive this Saturday to help families affected by the recent flooding in Chapel Hill.

According to a report on WRAL, flooding affected an estimated 150 residents earlier this month; 40 of those people had to be rescued. The water levels, which had risen to higher than 4 feet in some areas, damaged homes, cars, and displaced families.

Founded in April 2010 by Jackie Craig and Beth Smoot, The Green Chair Project has helped many families in the Triangle to restore hope and pride in their homes. The vision to develop this organization stemmed from the co-owners’ observations of people that did not want to part with their unused items “because the items are still good and could be used by someone”.

The Green Chair recycles donated furniture and provides restoration opportunities for families in need while reducing waste in our area. How many times have you come across a nice couch or nightstand on the side of a street? Those gently used items could have benefited families that have suffered natural disasters or can simply not afford to purchase items from a high priced furniture store.
