Residents reported seeing a bear in the Wakefield Pines area of north Raleigh Sunday morning, according to Raleigh police.

At last report, the black bear, which appeared to be on the move, had left the city and entered a wooded area of Wake County.

Police said they had three or four sightings by residents and then two officers saw the bear as it was running away. The bear was last seen on Kelway Drive off Wakefield Pines Drive, headed towards the wooded area of Falls Lake.

A 911 caller told authorities he and his wife spotted the bear on their morning walk. They said the bear was near the shopping plaza with a Dunkin Donuts and Kerr Drug and headed into the Wakefield Pines neighborhood.

Police are asking residents to be alert to the possibility of bear’s presence. They advise people to stay clear of the animal if they see it, and to make no efforts to impede its travel.

Law enforcement officers have been monitoring the area in an attempt to locate the bear.
