More than 2,000 people hit the jackpot in the Carolina Pick 4 lottery  Saturday night with a the numbers: 2-2-2-2.

This is referred to as “quads” – four identical numbers – are among the most popular combinations played in the Pick 4 game, and when they hit they hit big. Saturday night’s payout came to $7.4 million. The record payout of $7.5 million last August, depended on another popular set of quads. The numbers were 1-1-1-1.

The Pick 4 evening drawing over the past three months averaged $66,898, according to lottery spokesman Ryan Kennemur.

Altogether, 2,051 people picked 2-2-2-2 on Saturday night, and won either $5,000 or $2,500 depending on whether they paid $1 or 50 cents for their tickets. The odds of picking the correct Pick 4 numbers are 1 in 10,000.

Lottery officials expected unusual crowds of people cashing in their tickets yesterday at its six regional offices, including on Yonkers Road in Raleigh. They reminded winners that they have 180 days to claim their prizes.
