Say It Ain’t So. Whether you like them hot-spicy or mild there’s a wing shortage for this year Big game in New Orleans. Let’s pause for a moment of silence for all the chickens that did gave it up (moment of silence).

It’s a simple case of supply and demand–the National Chicken Council is taking Mother Nature and the federal government for a shortfall in the production of chicken wings. Consumption of wings are down 1.23 billion wing segments, that’s 12.3 million less than last year.

Americans are serious about their chicken wings, Super Bowl weekend is the second-biggest eating day of the year while Thanksgiving is still number one.

Could this drive up the price of wings? Supermarkets are running low and if you’re lucky to get your hands on some, be prepared to fork over about $2.11 a pound or more.

Maybe it’s time to change to menu to gumbo and red beans and rice.
