Today was a historic day for our country as we witnessed, President Barack Obama take the oath of office to begin his second term in office. It is a second term for the first African American POTUS and the second time he has taken the oath of office on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  The public viewing of the oath of office was made as he held his hand on the Bible once owned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During his speech President Obama rejected the notion that we had to choose between caring for a generation (older Americans) and investing in a generation (today’s youth).

“We reject that Americans must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future; the commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Social Security, these things don’t sap our initiative, they strengthen us.  They don’t make us a nation of takers, they free us to take the risks that make this country great”.

President Obama also said one of his priorities during his 2nd term is climate change and that our country can’t succeed if a “shrinking few” succeed economically while the middle class suffers.
