Singer Maxwell, who possesses one of the smoothest voices in R&B, turns 39 today.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, this soul singer made his musical debut in 1996 with the release of his debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite. It was an overnight success and featured numerous hit singles, including “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Whenever Wherever Whatever” and “Sumthin’ Sumthin.'” The success of the album launched him into super-stardom and landed him comparisons to greats like Marvin Gaye.

In the years that followed, Maxwell released two more albums Embrya (1998) and Now (2011); the former earning him a 1997 Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. Now rose to the top of the Billboard 200 and the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It spawned the singles “Get to Know Ya,” “Lifetime” and the hugely popular “This Woman’s Work.” It would also be the singer’s last album before an eight-year hiatus.

In July 2009 Maxwell returned to the mic with BLACKSummers’night. Four singles were lifted from the album including it’s biggest hit, “Pretty Wings.”

Fast forward to 2012, and Maxwell is preparing to release his fifth studio album blackSUMMERS’Night. In recent news he also announced he’s going on a short six-date tour, making stops in Los Angles, Atlanta and New Jersey. Each city will be treated to two nights of music – on the first evening Maxwell will perform his first two albums in its entirety and on the second night he’ll perform Now and BLACKsummers’Night.

Join us as we wish this man of music a very happy 39th birthday.
