In a deal reached with prosecutors, the protesters who pleaded guilty on trespassing and other misdemeanor charges will perform 40 hours of community service and pay $430 in fees. If they complete the work in the next six months, the charges will be dismissed.
“Their offense was against the community,” said District Attorney Colon Willoughby. “They should serve the community.”
Prosecutors say the deferred prosecution program offered to the protesters is what’s typically done for people charged with trespassing.
Assistant District Attorney Steven Saad, who oversaw the cases, said people who do community service are typically assigned to work with non-profit groups. He said they might wind up working at places such as soup kitchens and food banks.
