The history and meaning of US Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Here are a few activities to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Monday

♦American Legion Post 6 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars C.V. Cummings Chapel Hill Post 9100 will hold a Memorial Day commemoration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A service to remember deceased veterans will be at 8 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Events at the American Legion site on Legion Road will begin with an open house at 10 a.m. and memorial service at 11 a.m. with guest speaker Col. Saul Strauss.

♦The Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League will sponsor a Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at the All-Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol in Raleigh. The event will begin at 10:45 a.m. with music provided by the St. Francis Brass Quintet, followed by the main program at 11:30 a.m. Retired Marine Maj. Gen. Tom Braaten will deliver the keynote address.

♦The Historic Fitzgerald Family Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day ceremony and tour from 10 a.m. to noon, starting at the Maplewood Cemetery at 800 Kent St. in Durham. More than 112 African Americans are buried in the Historic Fitzgerald Family Cemetery, including pioneering Durham citizens such as Robert G. and Richard B. Fitzgerald, brothers who served on behalf of the Union in the Civil War.

♦The Rev. Henry B. Pickett Jr., an Army veteran and associate minister of Cosmopolitan Baptist Church in Raleigh, will speak at a Memorial Day ceremony at Carolina Biblical Gardens off Creech Road in Garner. The event begins at 11 a.m. and is sponsored by the Charles T. Norwood American Legion Post 157.

♦The Garner Veterans Memorial Committee and town of Garner will hold a Memorial Day observance at the future site of the Garner Veterans Memorial at Lake Benson Park off Buffaloe Road at 1:30 p.m. Garner VFW Post 10225, Garner American Legion Post 225 and Legion Riders Post 232 will take part in the ceremony, which will include a reading of the names of fallen Garner service members that will be on the future memorial. ♦The Orange County Peace Coalition will present its annual Memorial Day event in commemoration of the victims of war, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Carrboro Town Commons in Carrboro. There will be music, poetry and the playing of taps. David Caldwell will speak.

♦American Legion Post 7 will sponsor a Memorial Day celebration at 4 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Perry Ball.
