In an email to supporters, First Lady Michelle Obama announced the DNC 2012 convention will be held in Charlotte. President Obama made several trips to Charlotte during the 2008 campaign. The election that year created an unprecedented amount of civic participation from voting at the booths to volunteering to campaign. North Carolina was a key state in the 2008 election, and Obama was the first Democrat to win the state since former President Jimmy Carter.

North Carolina is once gain expected to be a pivotal state. The city and city leaders campaigned hard to land the convention.

“Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an “up by the bootstraps” mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue,” wrote the First Lady in her email announcement.

Charlotte beat out St. Louis, Cleveland and Minneapolis.
