A man waving a gun and shouting in a downtown Durham plaza was fatally shot by police yesterday afternoon after an hour-long standoff.

According to video, the man appears to say “shoot me” repeatedly while pointing his gun in the direction of police.

Bishop Franklin Hanes told WRAL News this morning that Derek Walker, an employee at Hanes Funeral Home in Durham, was the man shot by police.

After about an hour of attempting to negotiate with him, Walker pointed his gun at police and one officer fired at him. Walker died at the hospital a short time later.
