Each year, the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic, one of the nation’s premier celebrity golf events, strives to raise money to help find a cure for cancer and change these statistics. But they cannot do it alone; they need your help. The 20th annual Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic is scheduled for August 23 -25, 2013 at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, NC and volunteers are needed in several key areas.

Volunteers were the center of Jimmy V’s dream when he started The V Foundation. One of his favorite concepts was that ordinary people, working together, are able to achieve extraordinary things. The magical weekend is made possible because of the tireless efforts of more than 600 volunteers; ordinary people working with extraordinary passion to make things run smoothly and helping to achieve the goal of finding a cure for cancer.

“Volunteers are what make this event so magical,” said Pam Valvano Strasser, wife of the late Jim Valvano. “I just love to meet all the amazing people at the volunteer party who make a difference and make this magnificent tournament possible. It is, by far, the best part of the weekend for me.”

Over the past 20 years, the Classic’s reputation has grown into one of national acclaim, raising over $15 million dollars in support of The V Foundation for Cancer Research.  Nearly 500,000 spectators have come out to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer.  Celebrities and athletes such as Michael Jordan, Darius Rucker, Mia Hamm, Charles Barkley, Kevin Costner, Paul DiMeo, Tom Clancy, Chris Berman, Stuart Scott, Gale Sayers and Arnold Palmer have contributed their time and talents to help raise millions of dollars toward finding a cure. This year new celebrities like Tony Dovolani from the hit show Dancing with the Stars, MLB Legend Roger Clemons, and NBA legend Rick Barry have already committed to joining the effort on August 23rd – 25th at North Ridge Country Club.

Net proceeds from this year’s Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic fund-a-need will benefit the Jimmy V Cancer Therapeutic Training program at North Carolina State University, which encourages young scientist to pursue careers in cancer research through a unique, hands-on educational approach.
