Memorial Day is more than catching a great sale or firing up the grill with family and friends. Memorial Day honors those who have lost their lives for our great freedoms while serving in the military.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.

Here are a few Memorial Day weekend activities

The Durham Memorial Day Parade is Almost Here!

On Monday May 27th, the Town of Durham will have a parade honoring our veterans. The parade will begin at 10:00 at Davis Road and run south on Royalsborough Road(Route 136) to the back entrance of the Durham Community School. Stops will be made at the Gazebo and at Sawyer Cemetery. There will also be a fun run to benefit the AMVETS Post 13.

SUNDAY

CARY Members of Cary Franklin-Sloane VFW Post 7383 will place U.S. flags by the headstones of veterans at Cary cemeteries at 10 a.m.. At the request of some churches, some flags will be postponed until Monday at their respective cemeteries.

A ceremonial retirement of no-longer-serviceable U.S. flags by incineration will be performed at noon at 522 Reedy Creek Road. Unserviceable flags may be dropped off any afternoon from 1-5 p.m. For details, call 919-467-1188 or visit http://www.vfwpost7383.org.

*RALEIGH Boy Scout Cub Scout Pack 222 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 6 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 7100 Holly Springs Road. Bring a chair and U.S. flags in need of retirement. Flags also may be dropped off at the church in advance.

*WENDELL American Legion Post 148 will hold a Memorial Day observance at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hut, 5100 Wendell Blvd. Afterward, they will serve free hot dogs, chips and drinks to the public.

Welcome back summer and celebrate the USA with Memorial Day play! There will be a Star-Spangled Dance Party, Fireworks Painting, Rocket Science and more spring into summer fun.

Fayetteville has all kinds of activities to honor the men and women who have served our country as part of its 31 Day Salute, a month-long series of activities. This weekend, it includes a living history program at the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum.

Summerfield North in north Raleigh will hold its 20th annual Memorial Day parade at 10:30 a.m., Monday. The neighborhood sits between Six Forks Road and Falls of Neuse Road, and between Strickland Road and Newton Road. The event involves more than 500 families participating or observing and features local businesses, local politicians, neighbors, mascots and more
