I had the pleasure of meeting Maxwell in 1995 at an industry convention, he sported a huge afro, was quiet and very reserve. Later that evening, when he hit the stage to perform songs from the Urban Hang Suite album. Maxwell took on a whole new personae, his voice was one of smoothest I have ever heard.
His music spans R&B, funk and soul, but he is best known as one the architects of the neo-soul movement. After a successful debut album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, he released Embrya, and a live album MTV Unplugged. After his 1996 hit “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” Maxwell’s appeal has stood the test of time—from his remake of “This Woman’s Work” to the R.Kelly penned “Fortunate” that topped the R&B charts in 1999.
After a ten-year hiatus from recording, he returned with the #1 albun BLACKsummers’ night with the
Grammy-nominated “Pretty Wings”. The album BLACKsummer’s night is part of a trilogy and next chaper is slated for a 2013 release date
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAXWELL!
