School officials confiscated a loaded handgun from a third-grader at Daly Elementary School in Detroit after responding to a tip Friday morning, reports KTLA.com.
“We want to assure the community that the students of Daly Elementary are safe. No one was harmed,” said Val Hughes, executive director of instruction for Westwood Community Schools.
“This is a very serious matter,” Hughes said. “I’m very proud someone told. That’s what we try to instill in our students. If someone has something that’s going to hurt someone, or yourself, or you see something that you consider wrong, share that with an adult.”
According to Fox News, the child brought the gun to school on Thursday and a classmate went home and told his mother, who called the school the next morning around 8:30 a.m.. They checked the student and he had brought the same gun again. It was confiscated around 9:00 a.m.
This is not the first time that a child has brought a gun to school in recent memory.
