Event Facts
· Grandparents and other caretakers being a part of the extended family and supporting children is not a new concept, however, their role as the main caretaker is and continues to be on the rise.
· Non-traditional parental roles can pose distinctive challenges as the sacrifices made to care for children may call for adjustments and resources to help adapt to unique family dynamics.
· Understanding the needs of these caretakers, the Durham County Department of Social Services will host their 3rd Annual Grandparents Conference on Tuesday, September 18, from 8 a.m. to 4p.m., at Rogers-Herr Middle School.
· The 2012 theme for the conference is “Building Strong Caretaker Families.”
- The one-day conference will bring together grandparents, relative caretakers, non-profits and government service providers and community leaders to discuss the vital role of grandparents in supporting and nurturing children.
- Workshops will be held on law and policy, practice issues for service providers and resources for caretakers.
- Registration is free and lunch will be provided.
- Pre-registration for this event is requested by Friday, September 14.
