HILLSBOROUGH (WTVD) — A fatal accident shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Orange County early Friday.

The Highway Patrol said the crash happened around just before 4 a.m. when a driver lost control of a 1995 Toyota SUV during what appeared to be an attempt to avoid another vehicle or something in the road near the New Hope Church Road exit.

The vehicle rolled several times before landing on its roof.

Troopers said a Virginia man was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman in the SUV was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Neither was immediately identified.

The eastbound lanes were shut down while officers investigated at the crash scene. The interstate reopened just after 8 a.m.
